Mediendom Kiel

Built in 2003, the Mediendom is a special multimedia room at the University of Applied Sciences, Kiel, used as a lecture room and working place by the students of the Master course “multimedia production”.

The Mediendom uses the Digistar 5 theater system by Evans & Sutherland, which is the standard for the 21st century by letting audiences experience cutting-edge full-dome and large-screen digital entertainment and 3D computer-generated worlds.

For a 3D audio experience the Mediendom uses the SpatialSound Wave technology in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT in Ilmenau, Germany. The IDMT is doing applied research in the field of audiovisual media. The Institute is known as a competent partner of industry when it comes to developing groundbreaking technologies for the digital media domain. SpatialSound Wave is bases on the long-time experience of Fraunhofer IDMT with spatial audio reproduction technologies like Wave File Synthesis. SpatialSound Wave is based on the long-time experience of Fraunhofer IDMT with spatial audio reproduction technologies like Wave Field Synthesis. With SpatialSound Wave, the experts have created a very compact system for spatial sound reproduction, which works without a closed set-up of loudspeakers and although creates an impressive, acoustically realistic immersion. At the campus the Mediendom works closely with the department of Media and especially the Institute for Immersive Media. Immersive media are a key aspect of the department. Every two years the department organises the conference “iii (immersion, illusion, involvement)” and a festival for immersive media. It is also the publisher of the peer reviewed “Annual Book of Immersive Media”. Former students are now working in planetariums throughout Germany or as fulldome-producers.

For public audiences the Mediendom gives roundabout 1.300 performances per annum in an interdisciplinary approach. Pathbreaking productions like “Kaluoka’hina” or “Life of Trees” are important parts of season schedule from the very first. Other productions were made in Kiel and received international appreciation.
